Testing Hometown Font in a Real Web Design Project
I was working on a redesign for a boutique online store that sells handmade stationery and creative supplies. The client wanted something bold, playful, and visually unique to stand out from competitors. After some research, I landed on Hometown, a handwritten font from Script Amp that felt like the perfect match for their brand's personality.
As a web designer, I always start with the hero section. It’s the first thing users see, and it sets the tone. I tested Hometown in the headline and immediately noticed how its bold, expressive strokes added character without overwhelming the design. The font had a casual, almost personal feel that aligned perfectly with the brand’s story of handcrafted creativity.
One of the first things I checked was readability. Even though Hometown is a script font, it didn’t sacrifice legibility. On desktop screens, the letters flowed naturally, and each character was distinct enough to be easily read. On mobile, I made sure to adjust the font size and line spacing so the text remained scannable. It worked well at smaller sizes, which was a relief because many script fonts can become hard to read on small screens.
Next, I thought about where else Hometown could shine. It wasn’t just for headlines. I used it in call-to-action buttons, but only for short phrases like “Shop Now” or “Explore More.” The font’s playfulness added a nice touch of energy to these interactive elements. For longer text, like product descriptions or blog content, I paired it with a clean sans serif font to maintain balance and ensure the user experience stayed smooth and professional.
Font pairing is always a key consideration. I found that Hometown worked best when combined with a simple, modern sans serif like Helvetica Neue or Roboto. This combination gave the site a polished yet approachable look. It also helped reinforce the brand’s identity—creative, friendly, and trustworthy.
Another area I focused on was the use of Hometown in image overlays. The font looked great when placed over a background of paper textures or watercolor patterns. It didn’t clash with the visuals, and instead, it complemented them. This made it ideal for promotional banners, featured product sections, and social media graphics.
When designing the landing page, I made sure to keep the visual hierarchy clear. Hometown was reserved for primary headings and subheadings, while body copy used a more neutral typeface. This helped guide the user’s eye through the page and made the content easier to digest.
I also considered the technical aspects of using Hometown. It’s important to check if the font supports all necessary characters, especially if the website will be multilingual. In this case, the client didn’t need that, but it’s something to keep in mind for other projects. I confirmed that the font came with webfont availability and proper licensing for commercial use, which is crucial when working on client websites or selling digital assets.
One challenge I faced was ensuring that Hometown didn’t look too informal for certain sections. While it was perfect for the main header and creative sections, I avoided using it in areas where professionalism was key, like the checkout process or contact information. That’s when I realized that not every part of the site needs the same font—it’s about knowing when to use it and when to step back.
For the branding kit, I included Hometown as the primary display font. It became the go-to choice for logos, marketing materials, and even email headers. The font’s unique style helped create a consistent visual language across all digital touchpoints, reinforcing the brand’s identity and making it more memorable.
Overall, testing Hometown in this project was a great experience. It brought a fresh, creative energy to the design while still maintaining readability and usability. As a designer, I appreciate fonts that offer both style and function, and Hometown definitely fits that bill. Whether you're building a portfolio site, a coaching platform, or an online shop, this font can help bring your brand to life in a way that feels authentic and engaging.
